A Race That Stops the Outback

The infamous Moonie Yabbie Races are raising the stakes this year and even getting  a little bit fancy on 24 November!

Thousands of travellers from near and far have experienced this tiny town but nothing quite compares to when Moonie dusts off the Yabbie Track and gets serious for this ‘outback race day with a difference’.

Saturday, 24th November will be the seventh time the Moonie Sports Club hosts their annual event but it’s the first year the Yabbies reveal their very own website, check out  Newly elected president of the Sports Club Sam Baker said “it was time to ramp up the Yabbie Races and take some risks – we wanted to add fresh and new ideas this year.’  And fresh ideas they have added!

A chartered bus service will run to and from Toowoomba and Dalby for this year’s race, and a new merchandise stall will feature a designer range of yabbie branded products.  There will be a unique display of “yabbie inspired” artwork featuring all submissions for our Yabbie Competition – entry is open now (read about it on the website) - $200 is up for grabs!

In the same format as previous years, gates open at 2pm and the six race program kicks off at 3pm.  There’ll be eager punters and handfuls of cash when yabbies get auctioned off for up to $700 with winning yabbies sometimes taking home up to $1,500.  Outside the hustle and bustle of the betting arena there are raffles and sweeps with $2,500 in prizes; while kids go crazy for the rock climbing wall and jumping castle.

A new personality will work the microphone this year, Scottish entertainer come heart surgeon, Professor John Fraser, and a covert ‘fashion guru’ has been lined up to judge the Fashions of the Field, giving away $1,200 in prizes.  The evening’s band “Strange Dog” will rock the sports club all night long, while the crowds enjoy the country priced drinks, snacks and dinner.

If you haven’t yet made the trip out to Moonie for this race that stops the outback, this year will be a cracking good day to try it dress up like you mean it (standards apply), bring plenty of cash (no EFTPOS onsite or in town), pile in the kids, tell your friends and join us for a day you won’t soon forget.
